I also didn’t expect this to go out too late, honestly… Some of you probably can guess that I’ve had parts of this post kicking around in my drafts for a long time, because I often find myself noting that many of the world’s problems tend to stem from never having a discussion about what we want from our institutions. Our lack of consensus, and often lack of any significant thought, about the goals allows grifters and partisans to manipulate these institutions to their benefit, making the situation progressively worse. The issue came back to mind with the botched execution of Christa Pike. Nobody can reasonably defend what she did, but I also don’t think that anybody can rationalize incarcerating her for almost thirty years, only to subject her to her current condition.
