I treated myself to a CD of Kenny Garrett’s 2003 album Standard of Language, having been seduced by the Penguin Guide to Jazz calling it “unmissable” (and indeed I was not disappointed); the eighth track is called “Gendai,” and of course I had to look that up in my Japanese dictionary, where it was defined as ‘the present age, modern times; modern, contemporary, current.’ But then I wanted to know the etymology, so I turned to Wiktionary, where I learned that it was from Chinese 現代 (xiàndài), which also gave rise to Korean 현대 (hyeondae): Hyundai! So the company name means ‘modern’; the whole experience reminded me of when I learned that Subaru means ‘the Pleiades.’
