I feel pretty comfortable saying it about The Rouse, though. It's certainly a landmark work, and it's China Miéville's magnum opus. Everything he's been doing since King Rat and Perdido Street Station has been pointing towards this book. It wraps up the thematic threads from all of his previous work and bundles them together into one surprisingly digestible slab of a novel. I'm going to try to write about this without spoilers, which is harder than it sounds with a book this size. I did a short series of reading vlogs on TikTok while I was reading it, and those do contain some spoilers, so if you want more in-depth discussion of what actually happens they might be worth a look. With the caveat that I was reacting in real time and hadn't had a chance to sit with it and digest it properly. The Rouse follows two characters separated by time.
