When it comes to bonkers animated shorts, Pixar’s Fruit & Nut must come somewhere near the top of the list. It tells the story of a peanut, down on his luck and desperate for the love of a good strawberry. Things don’t seem to be going his way until one day, he picks up a hitchhiker and the connection is immediate. Unfortunately for him, his new fruity girlfriend is intent on leading himself astray in the pursuit of bread – and soon they become the Bonnie and Clyde of the snack world. With a great ending that I didn’t see coming at all (stick around for it – it gives you one of those “aha” moments), Fruit and Nut is a great showcase for the talents of the Pixar animators who created it. The short was written and directed by Rej Bourdages and Tony Maki and shows what can happen when animators are allowed to throw off their constraints for approximately seven minutes. It is a joy to watch, and I am sure that all the team involved will continue to have thriving careers, whether at Pixar…
