Every Roos Has Its Thorn: "Death is a Trouper" (1946) by Kelley Roos 0 ▲ Beneath the Stains of Time 1 hour ago · Writing · hide · 0 comments Writing under the shared pseudonym "Kelley Roos," William and Audrey Roos formed one of the best, cleverest and funniest writing duos of genuinely funny, cleverly-plotted detective novels starring their bantering, mystery solving couple of Jeff and Haila Troy – who appeared in eight novels and a dozen, mostly uncollected, novellas. The first seven novels were published between 1940 and 1949 with a surprising, final entry being published in 1966. And of the dozen, or so, novellas only three were gathered under the title Triple Threat (1949).Kelley Roos and the Troys may not be as well remembered today as the Norths, the Abbotts or the Duluths, but often they were "a good deal better than their more famous contemporaries." I consider The Frightened Stiff (1942), a personal favorite, to be one of the Great American Detective Novels that even today can still make readers laugh.
