Retro spotlight: Boxyboy, aka Sokoban World

“Sokoban” is one of those words that represents both a game and a genre. The game came first, naturally, and a wave of clones and inspiration followed, leading to the adoption of the subgenre designation. A Sokoban game is a puzzle game in which you push objects within a grid, attempting to get them to designated spaces without locking yourself out of further moves, and this style of puzzle has made its way into other games that are not, on the whole, Sokoban-style: think about certain puzzles in The Legend of Zelda games, for instance.There are plenty of games out there dedicated to the Sokoban ruleset from start to finish, however. HAL Laboratory’s Adventures of Lolo (Eggerland) was one such series that took clear inspiration from Sokoban and expanded upon its initial premise back in the 1980s and 90s, and the concept continued well into the future, too, with Wayforward’s WiiWare horror puzzler, LIT, basing its main gameplay around Sokoban pushing, as did 2019’s Baba Is You.
