Some recent research (mentioned in New Scientist, Feedback) on what cats actually do, was originally published in ‘Pets’ journal, 12 September. A team from Massay University, New Zealand, fitted cat collars out with activity monitors: 10 indoors cats, 18 free-roaming, 8 semi-outdoors cats.The results/conclusions? What do cats actually do? You’d expect the free-roamers to be most active, and they are. But what that amounts to is spending 3.9 of their time active.How does it all break down?2.4 to 7.8 of time spent eating4.6 to 7.9 grooming (after eating?)9.3 to 15.6 over all categories, they spent… standingwhile 20.1 to 41.4 sitting. And the rest? 34.8 to 52.9 guess whatlying (let’s be honest now, sleeping). There was no indication in the article of whether the cats had been neutered or spayed, of gender, of age. Some neutered cats we know have spurts of chasing, fighting, are constantly trying to get through windows, doors. Active enough, even more than some people – they want playing…
