Country People – Daniel Mason For some reason, I’d thought this book was about my part of Herefordshire, but it’s not …. not by a long chalk. Rather it’s a novel about a Californian academic family relocating to rural Vermont, interlaced with fairytales and folktales. And in tune with the folktale theme, there’s a Successful Wife, Hapless Husband, Smart Kids, Roguish Dog, all encountering The Interesting Locals. And it’s genuine interest, there’s no sneering superiority. Very enjoyable, although as often happens with literary novels, I suspect most of the lit references and allusions passed me by.
