Flowery end to September

So we’re nearly at the end of September and autumn is fast approaching. The leaves are starting to turn on the cherry tree. We’re still harvesting potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, runner beans and lots of apples. The main stars at the moment, however, are the late summer flowers. The partially selfseeded cosmos are amazing just now. Here ‘Fizzy White’: And ‘Sonata’: I grew these from seed last year and a few more this year, while the others selfseeded. Last year I also tried growing asters, intending them for my son’s wedding in July but they didn’t come to much. This year they also selfseeded and have produced the most lovely pink and purple flowers: The roses have mostly been good this year apart from the ‘Shropshire Lad’ which got a little neglected in the dry summer. It’s had a little late blossoming to remind me how very lovely it is and to take better care of it next year: Sweet peas, ice cream and kingfisher are keeping going in their shared bed with the runner beans: Everything…
