Hitchings and Spaeth morphological classification of the glaucomatous optic disc

I had no idea that this existed. We use Revolution EHR, and in the optic nerve section there is a dropdown menu for ‘disc type’. The choices are I - IV. I had no idea what it was for, so I checked with Open Evidence. Disc types I–V refer to the Hitchings and Spaeth (1976) morphological classification of the glaucomatous optic disc, developed at the Wills Eye Hospital Glaucoma Service from stereophotographs of 252 patients. This system describes five descriptive types of glaucomatous cupping, each thought to reflect different contributions to the pathogenesis of glaucomatous damage.  Recognizing the type may give clues to the mechanism operating in an individual eye.
