phobia, or the humanity in fear

phobia. phobias. thalassophobia. arachnophobia. ornithophobia. agoraphobia. xenophobia. megalophobia. claustrophobia. no, not claustrophobia. that one's half Latin. phobia comes from Ancient Greek, you know? from φόβος, meaning fear. an abstract idea, an emotion. or a god, if you so please. the Greeks had a tendency to do that sort of thing. make abstracts into gods. makes sense to me. fear can be greater than the human condition, you know? we don't want it to be, sure. but it is. and it will be. in a timeless way. an immortal way. ha, and you wondered why it was a god. well, maybe you didn't. I don't know. I'm not a god. yet, at least. who knows what the future holds. not even the gods did. that's what the Fates were for. the Μοῖραι. they knew, they dictated. they foretold. not the gods. the gods fought fate. often. Zeus couldn't protect Troy forever. but it was human of him to try. funny that. in fighting fate, the gods are made human. maybe it's the hopelessness of it all, the…
