Cover the Mirrors, Uncover the Crime

Russell Stone is a Rabbi whose career is on the slide. His run-down synagogue has been deserted by more or less everyone other than his cantor, Josh; the downbeat, miserable, occasionally outright distressing tone of his sermons may have something to do with this, and his hardline views have driven people away in the past – like Jack Lauder, who Stone expelled from his congregation eight years ago for having the temerity to seek an inter-faith marriage. Yeah, about that… three days ago, Lauder was murdered. And now the police have come sniffing around – because Lauder left Stone’s synagogue some $10,000 in his will – more than enough to clear the temple’s debts, get some repairs done, and keep the lights on just that little bit longer. It’s a total surprise to Stone – but no matter how much it incriminates him in the eyes of the police, it’s clear they have no substantive evidence to link him to the killing. Still – it doesn’t sit right with Stone. Sure, he could just take the money…
