A while back I reviewed Blackshard, a horror-themed walking simulator set in a vast futuristic megastructure. Such settings, like the one from Blame!, are kind of well-suited for videogame adaptations – they’re the sort of impossible landscape that computer graphics can evoke nicely, and at their best they can divorce designers from the need to present naturalistic features altogether in favour of creating entire landscapes with a visibly intentional architecture to them. In fact, there’s a bit of a microgenre of videogames which use megastructures for their setting – a bunch of which, including Blackshard, got offered on sale on Steam in a bundle recently. Here’s a quick dip into the other games in the collection… Lorn’s Lure You are a robot who has fallen into a deep underground megastructure when chasing a strange glitch in your vision. You have been down here for 237 years, and sooner or later your energy cell is going to run out – but maybe if you find and follow that glitch…
