Music Monday: Some more Charles Brackeen and Pat Thomas and Tyshawn Sorey

I was traveling over the latter part of the week and this cut into some of my music listening, but I did enjoy three albums this week during my travels. First, I’ve been going back to Paul Motian’s 1977 ECM date, Dance, pretty regularly. It’s pretty free even if it is peppered with plenty of post-bop. Charles Brackeen is really amazing on these albums with his searching soprano saxophone stealing the show. I posted in a few weeks ago, but it feels worth positing again. It inspired me to listen to Paul Motian’s next album with his trio, Le voyage, also with Brackeen. If Dance had a kind of simmering intensity, Le voyage is more gradual. In places, Brackeen’s saxophone is restrained and melodic; Paul Motian’s inventive drumming is subdued and complemented by J.F. Jenny-Clark on bass (best known for his work with Don Cherry in the 1960s).
