Wanting to destroy your computer has been a desire for as long as computers have been around. On Mastodon, my bud Christian Kras was trying to remember back to early Windows (XP, 98, ME, 95?) about a game that turned your desktop into an interactive space where you could destroy your computer desktop (digitally, of course) by choosing weapons, shooting things on the screen, placing explosives, etc, and it had chickens walking on the screen and lots of blood. After some digging, he found two games, both of which I remembered. His first find was Desktop Destroyer, aka Stress Reducer– not exactly what he remembered- but I do remember this one, it was a blast. As far as I can tell, this first appeared around 2008 or so, an.exe download via a stress management website (and it’s instantly playable in browser here, and a newer remake for Windows is on itch here). There were other games there, and a quiz to see your level of stress. Then you’d destroy your desktop with a variety of weapons…
