Vintage Backups

19 September, 2026 Vintage Backups I've sunk deeper into to the world of retro Windows. This time it's a period-correct Pentium III machine to run Windows 2000. I use it for real work so I need to keep it running, which means backups. If something breaks, I want to be able to recover it without too much hassle. This system has placed me outside the reach of modern hardware. My board uses the i440BX chipset which means Slot 1 CPUs, PC100 SDRAM, and PATA drives up to 137GB at UDMA33. It has AGP, PCI and ISA expansion slots. It also has an onboard Promise IDE controller for an extra two ports that can run at UDMA66. My particular configuration has an 850MHz CPU with 512MB of RAM and a 120GB IDE HDD. It's high-end retro. My issue is “how do I keep fresh backups?” Disks are disposable and I don't have many IDE drives left. Those few drives that I do have are liable to fail at any moment.
