Lucky Pierrot: Hakodate's famous burger chain

We first discovered the wonders of burger chain Lucky Pierrot while staying in the city of Hakodate but decided to come back for a second visit to the store right next to Onuma Quasi-National Park - their Togeshita (峠下) store. As it turns out, this is their flagship store, and it was huge. The Japanese call clowns ピエロ or “piero” after the French/Italian pierrot clown, hence the name and clown mascot. Each of the 17 Lucky Pierrot stores has a different theme, and this one was birds. More specifically, 19th century bird illustrations. This was the perfect store for me, since I actually love this sort of art. I even have one of the sulphur-crested cockatoo by artist Elizabeth Gould on my wall at home. I kept my eyes peeled for that one - alas I couldn’t spot it - but I did see another one of her works, the Leadbeater’s cockatoo.
