Having Andy Rooney on 60 Minutes being cranky about the modern world isn’t so cute anymore when the world is filled with old men—some in power, some not—who hate everything in the world that’s not them. And yeah, I am showing my age with an Andy Rooney reference, but whatever. The word “magic” bothers me a great deal when used in relation to IT. I would often hear it when trying to troubleshoot user problems, sometimes being said out of confusion over what tasks I would perform to fix the issue, but occasionally said out of anger and condescension. You had some users who couldn’t or didn’t want to understand the work I was doing to help them out, but sometimes you ran into people who didn’t value your work at all. The first group would say “magic” because of incomprehension, while the second group would say “magic” as they believed their jobs were legitimate and mine was not.
