Sightseeing in Hakodate

After climbing Mt Yotei on our recent Hokkaido roadtrip, our plan had been to continue to camp in the surrounding area and hike more mountains - but it ended up being a fairly rainy week, and my husband and I had both wanted to visit Hakodate at some point, so we made a bit of an impromptu trip down to Hokkaido’s third-largest city. Since we weren’t travelling during a major holiday period, it was super easy to get a last-minute booking for two nights at a cheap business hotel. Now, what is there to do in Hakodate? Of course there is the Goryokaku fort, which was the scene of the Battle of Hakodate. And the other main attraction is to head to the top of Mt Hakodate, which is said to provide one of the top three nighttime views in Japan. I also gave myself the personal challenge of finding the best coffee in Hakodate, and we visited four separate cafes while we were here.
