Process is the product

Niki de Saint Phalle, documented by Shunk-KenderI spent the better half of 4 years at the Elam School of Fine Arts, which is where Iearned about the documentative work of Shunk-Kender, an AMAZING duo who worked from the 1950s to 1970s capturing artists, often those from a performance background, setting up and executing work. There was something that drew me to their images in particular as it offered, in my opinion, a more “authentic” look into how the work was made and the modus operandi of the respective artist. The end result was great, especially since performance art was my niche, but sometimes this was not enough for a student like me who just HAD to know everything about an artist so I could study them and better my practice. Seeing documentation like this, whether in the form of photographs, sketches or writings, gave my view of the “known” artwork a greater dimension and depth. Eventually, it was all I was interested in. For me, making art was a process of discovery... But…
