A Postcard from a Labyrinth Artist

My collection of “postcards from the Internet” grew again this week when I received another complete-surprise postcard. Take a look at this: I’m sure that HïMY didn’t know, but I was obsessed with labyrinths and mazes when I was young. I’d have loved it as a kid if there’d been a labyrinth artist in my town! This postcard comes from HïMY SYeD, a Toronto/Vancouver-based historian, Islamic scholar, and… prolific labyrinth artist! The card features a hand-drawn labyrinth but also the domain name labyrinths.ca, at which there’s a website showing a lot of his work1. He’s built or drawn labyrinths all over the place, calling many of them “outstallations”: hey look, this one’s got the same design as the one on the postcard! Look at this monster labyrinth! “At 22 lanes, and being an even number of lanes, labyrinth hackers will grasp how hard it was to design,” SYeD said of it.
