Another interesting way to frame your interaction with social media, and really anything, is evaluating the type of person you become when interacting with that media or service1. Does interacting with social media lead you to become more like the person you want to be? Does it take you further away? I haven't found that social media impacts my empathy, though filter bubbles and custom feeds that no one else sees can do that2. It does impact how I spend time with those around me. My wife and I regularly tell my kids to put their iPads away and interact with the family, yet many times a day you'd look around and one or both of us are head down in a screen instead of interacting with the people who are in the room with us. So on balance, I'd say that my phone and social media are not making me more of the person I want to be.
