Fresh off of credit feeding my way through a batch of Toaplan hits, I’m back with another explosive and ridiculously low-priced shmup for your collection. Super XYX is a love letter to Toaplan that you can easily sink a few hours into. This game reminded me of so many things, though, not just Toaplan. It’s almost as if someone took my childhood toy box and digitized it. I see M.A.S.K., G.I. Joe, He-Man, GoBots, Transformers, SilverHawks, ThunderCats, and Battle Beasts. I see it in the colour palette, the artwork, and the character names. Super XYX is a vertical shmup by Team Grybanser Fox released in 2020. It had been in my wishlist since around the time I fell down this rabbit hole. The only reason it never made it into my collection before is because it is so frequently discounted that I knew I would have ample opportunity to get a copy. The game was well-received by shmup fans because it offers a good challenge and emulates that 16-bit style perfectly. That challenge was apparent…
