Why I Don’t Talk About 9/11

A few years ago, I read an article about an impending anniversary of 9/11 (I don’t remember which one specifically), and what I remember from it is a quote from one of the children of someone who died in the collapse of the twin towers. Essentially, this person said that there is never any long-term healing from the grief they feel, because every year they have to be subjected to another bombardment of news stories and documentaries and newspaper columns and magazine articles on the anniversary, which just refreshes all the misery and sadness again, and again, and again, every year. This isn’t an essay on how to deal with trauma on a national level. This is just me saying that on a personal level, I understand the kindness in just not bringing something up sometimes.
