This is a technical article, and even I think I went a bit overboard with this one.I read one Wikipedia article on Ansel Adams's photographic Zone System and I think I know everything. The arrogance! In my defense, it was the clearest article online I could find on the zone system; the rest were so full of fluff.Here's what I've learned: the Zone System is a way to make sure light elements of a photograph look light, and dark elements look dark. It's about luminance and the contrast of highlight and shadow between different points of an image.From pure black to pure white, the system divides it into eleven different zones, from Zone 0 to Zone 10 (or X, to be pretentious). Zone 5 is the exact gray middle between both extremes.The math behind this works out pretty well, aligning with the camera's built-in exposure system.
