It has been over two years since I have last posted a review for a mystery by Philip Macdonald. This book had been sitting on my TBR pile for a while, but alack and alas this read was a bit of a dud. Charles William, reviewing it at the time, was a bit lukewarm towards it: ‘Death on my Left—it is the boxing term, and a great title—produces a number of suspects and knocks them down with-out much troubling Mr. Gethryn. He, by unparalleled neatness, hits on the only man left, who was the favourite suspect all the time. I suspect Mr. MacDonald of being a little tired of murders and wanting to write another book like his superb “Patrol,” only full of more extreme spiritual pain. In fact, I suspect Mr. MacDonald of wanting to write a terrifying and intolerable and perhaps great book; and I hope he will. Meanwhile this, if not one of his best, is full of the MacDonald quality. Can one say more?’
