Rüdiger Suchsland’s “Hitler’s Hollywood: German Cinema in the Age of Propaganda” (Kino Lorbeer, 2018) made for interesting viewing this evening. It weaves a fascinating array of scenes and themes into a personal rumination of what Nazi Germany’s cinema might reveal about mindsets in the country. The result is good cinema, but I found it less satisfying as history. The pathos in the narrator’s voice and in the filmmaker’s script also made me uncomfortable at times.
