What happens next

Jacob Coxon’s thread on resigning from Anthropic is currently blowing up more than he ever hoped or expected. A lot of things are now locked in.There are a number of interest groups that have been on a collision course for a while. I think this is the moment an era-defining conflict starts. The parts I think I can see:One faction believe AI will kill everyone. They’ve been trying to warn us all about this for a long time. This is their moment to seize the narrative. I think they will succeed - the public are already primed to mistrust elites and the SV AI labs haven’t done themselves any image favours lately. So we’ll have a large public outpouring against AI.Another faction believe AI will help the human race ascend and solve all our problems. They’ll keep working on this in the face of protests, in secret underground labs if necessary.If it were just these two factions, the debate would be civil and progress would slow down.
