Nintendo arguably had its heyday with the concept in the 2000s, first with the Nintendo DS and later the 3DS, but for years the idea of carrying two screens in your pocket felt like something that belonged firmly to Nintendo's hardware. Now, it has suddenly become one of the more interesting corners of the retro handheld market, with manufacturers looking for ways to recreate that experience on modern devices. But there has been a problem with that resurgence, at least on the 3DS end of the spectrum: getting into good dual-screen emulation can be expensive.At the lower end, devices such as Anbernic's RG DS (and the upcoming RG DS Plus) have made the basic DS experience remarkably affordable, but their hardware leaves little room for 3DS emulation.
