Book Review: Songs of the Dead - Brandon Sanderson and Peter Orullian

In same ways this feels like a Hardy Boys book, you get 6 pages in and the hero has rescued someone from a car crash, found a drowning person, and opened an old mine with a mystery. While Songs of the Dead isn't quite that fast paced, it starts running and keeps running the whole time. In this manner it feels quite different than any other Sanderson books I've read, which have a slower pace with deeper character development. This also feels like Ready Player One, which spends lots of time referencing pop culture. Songs of the Dead spent it's time referencing metal music, and even as a metal fan I didn't understand a bunch of the references. I had a passing knowledge of most of the band names, but most of the deeper references went over my head. I found this to be the weakest novel I've read with Sanderson's name attached, yet I still cried in the last chapter watching the sacrifice of some of the character we had come to know.
