it really does come in waves. it seems like just a poetic metaphor, but i feel the crash and recede almost literally the tide is rising again its less like water and more like resin, being swirled across a surface. whorls and bubbles and ripples mar the process but every motion leaves behind another layer, thickening and strengthening and hardening i think there's an apt metaphor in that. if not for the imperfections, it might be totally transparent. you'd never know that protective layer was there. scoured away and reformed over and over though, it becomes a tangible thing, something with depth and texture as flaws are introduced i dont think it needs any morality ascribed to it, and perhaps i am romanticising it overmuch. perhaps it would be better for your layers of emotional security to never be tested, to remain unmarred forever. but there's a solace and a connection to seeing your flaws mirrored in someone else. sometimes manifested differently and never exactly alike, but…
