The last few weeks in the UK media Last night, as the sky began to lighten, I was trying to cry quietly enough not to wake my husband while I counted down the minutes to my next painkiller dose. It’s been four days since I could crack my elbow, and the pain is nauseating and dull. I realised I was doing pain breathing – shallow breaths in, holding it as long as I can and then breathing out slowly through gritted teeth. Every minute or so I had to remind my whole body to stop being rigid. I took the painkillers. After another few hours, I was able to get a little sleep. Today I pulled on a brace I embroidered with cherry blossoms. I used my walking stick, which is bright green with vines twisting round its length. Both helped.
