Understanding Testcontainers: The Ryuk Reaper

If you’ve used Testcontainers in any language (Go, Java, .NET, Python, Node, Rust), you’ve probably noticed an extra container hanging around in your docker ps output while your tests run. Its image is testcontainers/ryuk, and its name follows a pattern that varies by language library (the Go library names it reaper_<sessionID>, others use a similar shape with their own prefix). It sits there next to whatever Postgres, Redis, or Kafka containers your tests actually need. It arrives uninvited, lingers for the duration of the test run, and disappears at the end.
