And so, we find ourselves watching half a dozen re-enactors looking surly for the camera at Battle Abbey. Obviously we’re in a 1066-forward region now. I’ve got no interest in heading to the tapestry exhibition (partly because we drive past the usual home of the thing on the way to Dad’s once or twice a year). But heading to the site of the battle for the last Fri-dad before R starts school felt right. It’s a well-done site. Sculptures around the fields do a good job of making it human-scale. The little film onsite would have been a great intro… except that the playback kept glitching. I also left with a vague sense that it doesn’t do a great job of saying why 1066 mattered. The drama/personality conflict of the three (well, four) factions scrapping it out gets the focus. But I didn’t come away thinking that I’d been shown the start of a root-and-branch revolution of the rule of the UK. Maybe it wasn’t all that. Maybe I can wait for R to tell me. I can imagine that her history lessons…
