The Incomer

"Have you got wifi?" A brother and sister (Grant O’Rourke, Gayle Rankin) have been living on a remote Scottish island alone for 30 years. They go into attack mode when a man from the council (Domhnall Gleeson) shows up to evict them. As I type, a long (perhaps too long) chapter of my life is drawing to a close, and this comedy about not wanting to leave your safe little island hit close to home. Yes you can chart the course of the film from the first 2 minutes, but its sense of humour is oddball and full of surprises, and the story has a pleasing simplicity to it that makes for a satisfying journey and eventual end. The performances are great even down to the supporting actors. I can’t really explain why but it reminded of my time on Orkney (a place I revisited recently, sadly for a funeral). Perhaps it’s the Finman, or the puffins, or the wind that can lift you off a cliff-edge. The cinema was sold-out for this today, which is surprising but great to see. Reply by email
