This is where US 50 begins, and ends, in Ocean City, Maryland. Its other beginning and end is in Sacramento, California. As the sign says, it’s 3,073 miles away. I’ve driven US 50 across Indiana and about two-thirds of the way across Illinois. I’d love to drive it through Appalachia — I hear it’s good and twisty. And of course I’d love to drive the section out west that they call The Loneliest Road in America — long and straight for hundreds of miles through the desert. Long road trips require generous amounts of time, amounts not available to me while I’m still in my career. But I can almost see its finish line from here. Six, maybe eight more years. One of the things I’m still working for is to have enough money to get in my car and go. To get Down the Road in your inbox or reader six days a week, click here to subscribe!
