Your project needs a code of ethics, not conduct

Recently I've been thinking about moving away from Debian due to… recent circumstances.¹ I'm not one to change their setup often so if I was to choose to learn how to use a new operating system (and it would have to be quite different than what I'm used to²) I'd want it to be a safe pick. Namely, it needs to be something I can reliably expect not to make the same mistakes in the future. So far, my criteria has boiled down to two points: The project should have a code of conduct with an enforcement mechanism. In my opinion, if your code of conduct is "just don't be mean" or "don't give us a reason to need a code of conduct," that's essentially synonymous with "abusers will get away with bad behaviour". The project should exclude people who will do harm to the community before they do harm. The remedial step is a backup. The project should have a clear policy on LLM usage, ideally on the grounds of ethics. Unfortunately, there basically isn't a mature operating system that satisfies…
