Since its inception, it was conceived to be free and multi support, which make it very attractive. And since 2015, it didn’t needed any additional plugin for web ports, making it easier than ever to distribute games on the Internet. It became the favorite engine for many hobbiysts developers, students, professionals, etc… Unity was always a free engine with paid versions, but in the later years of existence, the importance of paying to get the most of it became more and more noticeable, until 2024 where the tipping point was reached, what many people (me included) considered the ultimate insult: a fee per installation. This insane idea sent a clear message: you hobbyists doesn’t matter, we care about professionals only. Even though it was cancelled after a very loud backlash, the damage was done. There is another engine called Godot. It is older than Unity, but became Open Source in 2014, which made its popularity skyrocket. Its user friendly… No comments yet.
