As one who used to collect the large jugs and vessels from the Edgefield Pottery region of South Carolina, it is hard for me not to imagine those workers when I look at this fellow. If you are not familiar with the work of Dave the Edgefield potter you might look him up, There have been discoveries about the enslaved artist since. He did indeed make clay jars this big and incised many of them with poems and sayings of his own creation during the 1830 to 1850 era. Wherever this carved wooden man came from, I find it inspiring and beautiful. Antique carved wood man holding a large vessel.
