Middlemarch

Book review for Middlemarch by George Eliot. I rated it 4.5 stars Middlemarch by George Eliot is a rather hefty English classic, clocking in at over 800 pages. Written in 1871, it's even regarded as the best novel (published in English) of all time by The Guardian. I'll admit the size of the book put me off reading it for quite a while, but lately I found myself looking for a longer book to sink my teeth into and this seemed like the perfect candidate. In short, if you are a fan of Jane Austen, you will probably like Middlemarch. In some senses though it is also like an anti-P&P, as we learn that speed-running into marriage after a brief romance doesn't always lead to a happy ending after all. The book broadly follows the storylines of three couples. There's young Dorothea, uptight and religious, who falls in love with Mr Casaubon, a reverend 25 years her senior. Predictably Casaubon turns out to be Quite Boring so Dorothea begins to regret that her idealised version of a romance…
