There are 6 pages listed on the English-language Wikipedia site under the category “Dutch sausages.” There’s Balkenbrij, sort of a cross between a black pudding and scrapple; Braadworst, a precursor to the South African boerewors; Frikandel, a casingless cylinder of spiced minced meat often deep-fried and served in sandwiches like the Belgian Mitraillette; Metworst, an air-dried pork sausage akin to hard salami or German Kottenwurst; Ossenworst, a sausage of minced raw beef flavored with pepper, cloves, nutmeg, and mace; and Rookworst, a sort of ring bologna that may be an ancestor of the Pella Bologna from Pella Iowa that I grew up eating. Today’s sandwich is called Grillworst (or Broodje Grillworst in the naming pattern used for Dutch sandwiches that should be familiar to long time fans of the Tribunal). Grillworst literally means sausage that has been grilled or roasted, and naturally I expected going into this month for that sausage to be one of the 6 “known” Dutch sausages. But…
