Born between the 1930s and 1940s, they lived through the Second World War to see society change completely. Our living memory, our no-nonsense guides. Four family members. Four people who will not hear about our trip to Brighton to watch Bologna play the local team. They will not hear about the extension of my work contract, nor details of our plans for the garden. They won’t hear those little anecdotes that made them laugh, or stories about life in the UK. Death is too quick; our minds can’t grasp its reasoning and meaning. Never prepared, we are left with the memories, the love, and the visible absences. Suddenly, we are the adults, the oldest family members who offer support to the youngest. We do this while missing our own support, the people we looked up to. What a stupid age. Reply via email
