Inspired by other weird shoot-‘em-ups of the time, notably Gradius and R-Type, Kaiko, a German software developer, created Apidya. Released on 20 April 1992 (that’s 4/20!), the game weirdly featured Japanese text on the main menu, and the Roman numeral II. “The idea was to tell the story that Apidya I was only published in Japan and this was the sequel.” Peter Thierolf What started out as a space shooter evolved into a strange little gem about a guy who transforms into a wasp to get an antidote to cure his poisoned love interest. This was all recounted using anime cutscenes, an awesome soundtrack by Chris Huelsbeck, and kickass pixel art. As a wasp, you must navigate through several frustratingly difficult scenes (this is a compliment). You begin in a meadow to set the vibe: wasp vs other insects and small creatures.
