A classless, level-less rules hack for folk heroic play I noted in my last post that 5.5e D&D is a lot more powerful and super heroic than the D&D that lives in my mind, but it retains a lot of the old system still. So I thought I would make a few changes so you can play lower-powered D&D with the current ruleset. I call it Origins 5.5e, both because you build a character with just the character origin rules, and to emphasise its connection to the older type of play. Use these rules to play low-level and old school adventures, or make your own with the wealth of low-CR 5.5e monsters and high-quality maps in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. You can use the free Basic Rules from D&D Beyond, you can use the regular Player’s Handbook (though you won’t need half of it), or any of your other books, because there are only a few changes, the most important of which are that classes and levels are eliminated.
