Lift Up the Lid (1948) a.k.a.The Innocent Bottle by Anthony Gilbert

It has been over a year since I last read a novel by Anthony Gilbert, my previous read being the excellent Something Nasty in the Woodshed (1942). A friend recently mentioned reading one of Gilbert’s books, which reminded me that I still had one on my TBR pile, and this is what led to today’s review. On the whole Gilbert is a good writer (if not one I can binge read) but unfortunately Lift Up the Lid is not a great example of this. As The Saturday Review of Literature says, this one is ‘for Crook* enthusiasts’. *Arthur Crook is the name of one of Gilbert’s series sleuths.
