A critic can recommend a book that changed him. What he cannot do is recommend, at scale and in advance, the book that would change him next — because what a critic sells is continuity of criteria, and that book’s whole function is to break them. This isn’t a complaint about any particular paper. It’s a description of a job. But it accounts for a mismatch I couldn’t otherwise explain: why institutional culture coverage so reliably fails to be for me. The usual defenses of fiction come in four flavors, and all four are true. Fiction extends experience — it is the only way to occupy a mind that isn’t yours. It offers craft pleasure: watching a made thing hold, sentence by sentence. It articulates, putting words to something you’d felt and never formulated. And it absorbs; for a few hours time stops costing anything. Music is the useful control. It articulates and absorbs at an intensity fiction rarely exceeds — grief with no death attached, exaltation with nothing won — and it does this…
