Maybe it shouldn't be. OpenAI didn't earn the nickname "ClosedAI" because ChatGPT did something naughty. It flipped its moral foundation because Sam Altman and the rest of the human leadership decided to do so. Their excuse is that private tech is easier to control than open source, and while that's true, they knew that from the beginning. Acting like they're reacting to an unpredictable situation is either a post-hoc rationalization or a lie, which means they're either incompetent or evil. Just as Herman says here in the Bear Manifesto, "Trust isn't just a legal structure, but a social contract." When companies like OpenAI turn 180 degrees after they get popular, it destroys trust. Their mission statement, which has changed 9 times in 10 years, now reads ensure that artificial general intelligence…
