A weekend in Columbus, Indiana

For my birthday this year my wife arranged a weekend in Columbus, Indiana, a small city about an hour south of Indianapolis. It’s the home of Cummins, the engine manufacturer. For a whole bunch of reasons related to this major employer, it is home to a number of true architectural gems, and has avoided most of the decay that has befallen similarly-sized cities across Indiana. Zahariko’s is an ice-cream parlor that has been in operation since 1900. It’s very old-timey inside. The main street is Washington Street, and it’s lined with shops and restaurants. So are some of the side streets, which is where we found this great old neon sign on a still-operating tavern. The crown jewel of neon signs in Columbus, however, is the Crump Theater. We caught it under a beautiful evening Indiana sky. Last time I photographed the Crump, its future was uncertain. Read about it here.
