UK Public House Names

We were listening to a podcast about Anne Bonny and Mary Read: real-life pirates of the Caribbean. Mary Read and her husband opened a pub called The Three Horseshoes and the presenters commented about how it was a nice name. That set us off on a quest. We’ve heard the trope that all the pubs in the UK have either an animal, plant or body part in their name: The Red Lion, The Pear Tree, The Athletic Arms. The Three Horseshoes fit the template. But how true was it? Step 1: Find the Data We needed to find a decent list of UK pubs and it turns out that you can download a CSV of 50,000 registered public houses. This is a list from 02024, so your favorite place may or may not have made the cut. Also, what a company trades as and what’s on the door are not guaranteed to be the same either.
