And Joyce Millman’s review of Amy Rigby’s solo debut, “Diary of a Mod Housewife (1996)”, the title a play on the title of a 1970 film, got me to run by Tower Records on the Mountain View/Palo Alto border and pick it up. I loved it. Rigby works, unafraid, at the intersection of indie pop and country. It’s a place where you can do some powerful workings. And it got me to revisit other women singing country and appreciate what Dolly Parton, Lucinda Williams, Laura Cantrell1, and others were doing. It’s an album made during a break up2. A lot of great albums have come out of those traumas: Richard and Linda Thompson’s “Shoot Out the Lights,” (1982) Sleater Kinney’s “Dig Me Out,”3 (1997), Marianne Faithful’s “Broken English” (1979), and “Diary” is another.…
